Apollo 16

185cm x 95cm

2024, Oil on Canvas

“Apollo 16” draws on NASA’s 1972 Apollo 16 mission and Hasselblad photographs from the Descartes Highlands, combining these historical references with AI-generated imagery. Astronauts, scientific equipment and the Lunar Roving Vehicle occupy the stark lunar terrain, bringing the documented exploration of commander John Young and lunar-module pilot Charlie Duke into conversation with an imagined future beyond Earth.

Painted in oil with detailed, expressive brushwork, luminous white suits and the rover’s metallic, gold-toned elements emerge from the grey lunar dust beneath an infinite black sky. Deep shadows anchor the figures to the surface, heightening the contrast between a brief human presence and the vast emptiness that surrounds it.
