Ares

105cm x 155cm

2024, Oil on Canvas

“Ares” portrays an astronaut standing alone beneath a vast, rust-coloured sky, surrounded by an atmosphere that feels both alien and strangely familiar. The figure’s stillness contrasts with the expansive field of warm orange and ochre tones, creating a sense of isolation, endurance and quiet anticipation. A small, distant form on the horizon hints at a world that extends far beyond the astronaut’s immediate surroundings.

Painted in oil with expressive, layered brushwork, the work uses shifting reds, golds and earth tones to evoke the harsh beauty of a Martian landscape. The astronaut’s pale suit emerges from the intense colour around it, suggesting humanity’s fragile presence within an unfamiliar environment. Through its restrained composition and atmospheric light, Ares invites reflection on exploration, solitude and the courage to stand at the edge of the unknown.
