About these terms

These terms apply to every purchase from Maclaren Studios (maclarenstudios.co.uk). By placing an order, you agree to them.

Maclaren Studios is run by James MacLaren, an independent artist based in the UK. You can contact me at james@maclarenstudios.co.uk.

Nothing in these terms affects your statutory rights as a consumer under UK law.

Orders, prices and payment

All prices are in pounds sterling (GBP) and include free packaging and tracked UK delivery.

Payment is taken in full at checkout through the secure payment options on my website. Your order is confirmed when you receive a confirmation email.

Original paintings are one of a kind, so they are sold on a first-come, first-served basis. If an item sells out or is listed, I will contact you and offer a full refund.

Shipping and delivery

Free UK shipping on all orders. Every price includes careful packaging and tracked delivery within the UK.

Framed prints and original paintings are sent by a tracked delivery service and typically arrive within 2–3 weeks of ordering. Delivery times are estimates; I will let you know if anything is likely to take longer to quicker to your address.

International orders: I'm happy to ship worldwide. Please get in touch before ordering for a shipping quote. Any import duties, taxes or customs charges in your country are the buyer's responsibility.

Damaged or faulty items

Every piece is carefully checked and packed, but if your artwork arrives damaged, please contact me as soon as possible, ideally within 48 hours, with photos of the item and its packaging. Please keep the packaging until the issue is resolved.

I will arrange a replacement, repair or full refund, including any return postage. This does not affect your legal rights if goods are faulty or not as described.

Returns and cancellations

You can cancel your order and return it for any reason within 14 days of receiving it. To do this, email me within that period to let me know.

The artwork must then be sent back within a further 14 days, unused and in its original condition and packaging. Return postage is paid by the buyer unless the item is damaged or faulty. Please use a tracked and insured service, as the item is your responsibility until it reaches me.

Once I receive the item, I will refund the full price, including the original delivery cost, within 14 days. Refunds go to your original payment method.

Commissioned and personalised work is made specifically for you and cannot be returned unless it is faulty.

Commissions

Commissions are agreed individually, including size, subject, price and an estimated completion date.

A deposit of 50% is required before work begins, with the balance due on completion and before dispatch. If you cancel after work has started, the deposit may be kept to cover time and materials already spent.

As each commission is a creative process, completion dates are estimates. I will keep you updated and share progress where possible.

About the artwork

I make every effort to photograph my work accurately. However, colours can look different depending on your screen settings, so slight variations between the image online and the finished piece are normal.

Original paintings are unique, handmade works. Small variations in texture and brushwork are part of their character, not a fault.

Where prints are sold as limited editions, the edition size is stated on the product page and will not be exceeded. Prints are signed and numbered by me.

Copyright

All artwork and images on this website are © James MacLaren. Buying an original or a print gives you ownership of that physical piece, but the copyright stays with me.

This means artwork may not be copied, reproduced, printed, or used commercially without my written permission. You are welcome to share photos of your purchase on social media; a tag or credit is always appreciated.

I may photograph and use images of sold work for my portfolio, website and promotion.

Caring for your artwork

To keep unframed prints in perfect condition, I recommend framing them as soon as possible. Until then, handle them with clean, dry hands or cotton gloves and avoid touching the printed surface.

For all artwork, avoid hanging in direct sunlight, near radiators, or in damp rooms such as bathrooms. Oil paintings can be gently dusted with a soft, dry brush; please don't use water or cleaning products.

Privacy, liability and governing law

Privacy: I only use your personal details to process and deliver your order and to reply to your messages. I will never sell or share your information for marketing.

Liability: My liability for any order is limited to the price you paid for it. Nothing in these terms limits liability where it would be unlawful to do so.

Changes: I may update these terms from time to time. The version on the website when you place your order applies to that order.

Governing law: These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales.
