Apollo 16 - Original Oil Painting

In April 1972, John Young and Charlie Duke spent three days exploring the Descartes Highlands, one of the last times humans walked on the Moon. Apollo 16 revisits that moment on a monumental scale, combining NASA's Hasselblad archive with AI-generated references to place the real mission alongside an imagined future beyond Earth.

Astronauts, scientific instruments and the Lunar Roving Vehicle stand out against the grey lunar terrain beneath a deep black sky. Brilliant white suits and the rover's gold, metallic details catch the light, while heavy shadows hold each figure to the surface. The result is a striking contrast between a brief human presence and the vast emptiness around it.

At 185 × 95 cm, this is a commanding statement piece, painted entirely by hand in oil with detailed, expressive brushwork. It is part of James MacLaren's six-painting Astronaut Collection, a three-year body of work exploring humanity's journey into space.
