Orion - Original Oil Painting
Alone in the darkness of space, an astronaut reaches beyond the edge of the canvas, caught somewhere between emerging and dissolving. Orion captures a moment of movement, uncertainty and transformation, where the pull of home meets the vastness of the unknown.
Reflected in the gold visor, a distant Earth glows as a small blue beacon, fragile against the void. The luminous white suit stands out sharply against a near-tangible black, while its fragmented, dissolving edges suggest both vulnerability and possibility. Hyperrealist detail and surreal forms come together to evoke a quiet, existential unravelling, and humanity's lasting urge to venture into the unfamiliar without losing sight of where it came from.
At 85 × 126 cm, this is a striking portrait-format statement piece, painted entirely by hand in oil. It is part of James MacLaren's six-painting Astronaut Collection, a three-year body of work exploring humanity's journey into space.
